LINGUISTIC PROJECTS
French Linguistic Meetings
The students in the first year of Vocational Training in Commercial Activities, as part of their French language course as a second foreign language, participate in linguistic exchange sessions aimed at improving communicative competence and promoting linguistic cohesion. The main goal of these meetings is to enhance the students' communication skills and foster good relationships between them. This initiative involves several educational institutions, including the Vilafant Institute and the Montgrí Institute in Catalonia, as well as the Lycée Déodat de Séverac in Céret, France. Through this exchange project, students have the opportunity to explore other cultures and improve their language skills, while also learning about local commerce in their respective cities.
The exchange trips, which include a visit to France and two visits to various locations in Catalonia, are an exciting part of the program, as they allow students to explore new places and practice the languages they are learning. In addition to improving their language skills, the program encourages friendship and collaboration among students from different schools. This helps them feel more confident and open to interacting with people from other countries and cultures. In summary, this exchange project provides students with an excellent opportunity to develop both personally and academically, while discovering new cultures and improving their foreign language skills.
English Corner Vilafant
The English Corner is a collaborative project between various local administrations and secondary education centers in Figueres and Vilafant. The aim of this project is to transform each school into an institution of quality, prioritizing basic competencies, especially English language proficiency, with a particular focus on oral skills.
The goal is to promote equity and equal opportunities through foreign language learning. As part of the project, a language assistant is incorporated into the classrooms to enhance English proficiency throughout the educational system, with the intention of helping students reach a B2 level of English by the end of their secondary education.
Participating Centers: INS Vilafant, Escola Les Mèlies, and Escola Sol i Vent in Vilafant (since the 2018-19 academic year). INS Cendrassos, INS Olivar Gran, INS Alexandre Deulofeu, INS Narcís Monturiol, and INS Ramon Muntaner in Figueres.
English Time
Since the 2014-15 school year, our school has participated in the English Time project with other schools in the Alt Empordà region. The project includes various activities, culminating in a final event called the Masterclass, where activities in English are organized jointly by the participating schools.
The main objective of this project is to increase students' exposure to the English language in the classroom. Specifically, for 2nd-year ESO students, three consecutive hours are dedicated each week to Social Studies, Mathematics, and English.
“English Time is a great opportunity for our students. The more exposure they have to the foreign language, the better. We hope everyone makes the most of this experience!”
One-Day Trips: Practicing Foreign Languages Beyond the Classroom
At INS Vilafant, we believe in bringing language learning to life by giving students opportunities to practice their skills in real-world contexts. To achieve this, we organize one-day trips for ESO and baccalaureate students, blending cultural exploration with active use of foreign languages.
Some of these trips include visits to iconic local sites like the Olot volcanic area or the Dalí Museum in Figueres, where students enjoy guided tours in English. These experiences allow them to expand their vocabulary and improve listening comprehension while connecting language learning with the region's natural and artistic heritage.
In Barcelona, students participate in activities such as a gymkhana designed to involve interaction with international tourists. These tasks encourage students to use their English communication skills in a fun, dynamic way, building their confidence in spoken language.
To add an international dimension, students also visit nearby French villages, where they engage with local residents, practice speaking French, and experience the culture firsthand. These trips provide a bridge between the formal setting of language classes and authentic communication, fostering both linguistic and intercultural competence.
Through these carefully designed outings, students not only improve their foreign language skills but also develop a deeper appreciation for the cultural richness of their surroundings and beyond.
